NOT so long ago, I wrote a column about how ridiculous it is that women are now forking out the equivalent of the price of a second- hand car on handbags like the pounds 2,180 snakeskin Chloe Betty and the pounds 1,545 Fendi Spy.
How had this come to pass, I mused, that we are prepared to use our whole credit card limit on one item of arm candy?
Well, having recently acquired one of these so-called statement bags (a Chloe Paddington, to be precise) I totally understand why.
Because they grab other women's attention and leave them virtually drooling in the same way a red Ferarri grabs the eye of envious men.
Tiffany Bracelet and BangleYes, in the few shopping trips my bag and I have taken recently, it has been talked to by sales assistants in shops more than I have.
It has a life of its own. On a hotel stay recently, the girl at the front desk had no qualms about asking outright "is that a Chloe bag?" and could she The Bangles Eternal have a closer look.
Browsing the rails in high street shops with my beloved bag nestled carefully in the crook of my arm ( a la Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie) I can feel other women's eyes on it.
Even paying for my shopping in Morrison's just the other day, the girl on the till could
embroidered patches barely take her eyes off my bag long enough to swipe my groceries.
It is without doubt the greatest legal mood enhancer I have come across.
Not only that, but I have found when I am carrying it I can get away with wearing just about anything else I want because once the bag is in place I am instantly fashionable and hip. And, should the weather be good enough for sunglasses, all the better because trendy shades are the silent partner of statement bags.
in fact, the only problem with my bag is that these things are so prohibitively expensive it is likely to be the only one I ever own and given the fickle nature of the fashion world soon it will be so out of date that I will be too ashamed to carry it.
