Warning after handbag snatches

A SPATE of drive-by bag snatches has sparked a warning for women from police.

Raiders driving a white Austin Metro struck three more times after trying to steal bags from two women on Thursday.

And yesterday three more women were targeted in similar thefts across Halifax.

Calderdale Police intelligence coordinator, Inspector Mark McManus said: "This type of offence is on the increase.

"Suspects are targeting lone females walking on pavements or grass verges and residential areas."

An 82-year-old woman's shopping bag was snatched on a grass verge in Myrtle Drive, Illingworth, Halifax, at 3.20 pm on Friday. The victim described the thieves as a black man with a bald head and a white man with a goatee beard, black baseball cap and jacket.

At 4.30 pm on Friday a white Metro screeched to a stop in front of a 71-year-old woman in Moorfield Street, Savile Park, Halifax.

A woman jumped out of the car, ran toward her and grabbed her handbag, before climbing back into the vehicle and escaping.

The raider was a slim white teenager, 5ft 4ins, wearing a dark baseball cap, dark jacket and trousers. The driver was a white teenage man with short hair.

A 57-year-old woman was the next victim at 4.51 pm in the Tesco supermarket car park, King Cross, Halifax.

The woman was taking her trolley back when a white vehicle stopped to let her cross. It then sped alongside her and the driver snatched her handbag from her shoulder and sped off.

The raiders were described as two thin Asian men, both with pointed noses, wearing baseball caps. One wore a cream puffer jacket.

Inspector McManus said the raids were thought to be linked, as well as two on Thursday in the RSPCA car park, Wade Street, Halifax, and the Somerfield supermarket car park, Chanel Flap Bags Huddersfield Road, Elland.

The Metro, registration number G124 LCX, was torched in Wellington Street West, Halifax, at 4.25 am on Saturday. It was stolen from Broad Street car park, Halifax, on Thursday, between 5.45 pm and 6.50 pm.Yesterday, a 55-year-old woman was targeted by drive-by bag snatchers while walking across a grass verge in Sandhall Green, Pellon, Halifax, between 4.50 pm and 5 pm.

The passenger grabbed the bag. He was a white 16 to 20-year-old man, wearing a dark woollen hat and a fawn coat.

At 5.15 pm, a 21-year-old woman had her bag snatched after a car crossed a grassy area in Grove Gardens,
embroidered patches Ovenden, Halifax. Two white men were in the car.

And a 36-year-old woman's handbag was grabbed when a car approached her with the headlights turned off in Stainland Road, Holywell Green, at 9.35 pm.

The passenger, who took the bag, was white, in his early 20s, wearing a black woollen hat. He had prominent dark eyebrows and a thin, black moustache.

A 75-year-old woman was targeted by a "good looking" bag snatcher.

She put her bag down while unlocking the door to a block of flats in Halifax Road, Todmorden at 5.25 pm on Saturday.

A raider tried to snatch bag but the woman grabbed a strap. The thief tugged it from her grasp and ran off.
