Beauty Style GET the autu

Hold on to your handbags, girls. Undiluted grown-up glamour is back. You thought the 80s were just a cruel joke played by someone with more shoulder pads than style.

But the decade which spawned the mustard yellow power suit is this season given the official stamp of approval as it returns for a repeat performance.

One aspect of the 80s, however, makes a welcome return. Power make-up - epitomised by Jerry Hall in that Roxy Music video - returns with a vengeance.

For make-up artists, it is a dream come true. The natural look which dominated the 1990s is finally dead.

The new century is the time to celebrate sophistication, ladies who lunch and party girl glamour.

The season's looks are taken from the times when women were at their most daring - the 1920s, 1940s and, of course, the in-your-face 80s.

The look is reflected - in different degrees of daringness - across the autumn collections.

Show stoppers MAC have taken the look to the max, while the more conservative cosmetic houses have simply injected their collections with serious colour.

MAC's new collection, Lady Danger, will please night rangers and day trippers alike with a range of hot reds mixed with browns, purple grey and gold. For super-sexy eyes, the new MAC Paints, tubes of creamy eye colour, really create the idea that your face is a blank canvas just waiting to be painted.

Clinique is also celebrating the return of the sharply-dressed city slicker. The cosmetic company has declared it is moving away from androdgenous casual looks and instead turning to high style and hot make-up.

With names like Berry Passion and Solar Heat in its new collection, Take Aim at Colour - available now for a limited time - Clinique makes it clear the natural look is dead and buried.

Yves Sain Laurent's Snapshot collection has been designed to capture the new glamour and spontenaity. Created for a woman who is sure of herself, it is time for shrinking violets to take a back seat.

Red lipsticks are everywhere - from bright Copyright Red by Yves Saint Laurent to darker berry red Miss Dish by MAC and Oil of Olay's Metro Maroon (pounds 6.49, available October)

Glosses and stains are also big news this season. Try Bobbi Brown Mattestain for intense colour without too much scary bite. Perfect for Tiffany Bracelet and Bangle wearing with this season's opulent textures - velvets, cashmeres and corduroys.

For intense colour with a twist, have a go with one of the more orange shades around. Try Anna Sui's succinctly named Orange (pounds 11), Estee Lauder's Pure Colour Lipstick in Paprika (pounds 14) or Clinique's new Ginger Cookie (pounds 11.50).
